Russian Doll - Dying's never been that easy

I love groundhog day. Like, the idea of reliving the same day over and over until you finally do something right so you can finally move on with your life completely amazes me. But the last couple of years this concept has been really underrated, and the very few directors that dive into this sub-genre, well, let's just say it didn't go that well. But Russian Doll came out, and let me tell you, it's going to be one of your favorites shows at the moment. And you will want to relive it over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over...

Basic Info:

Episodes: 8 episodes (30-ish minutes each)
Creators: Leslye Headland, Natasha Lyonne, Amy Poehler.
Production: Netflix
Cast: Natasha Lyonne,  Charlie Barnett, Greta Lee.
All episodes currently streaming on Netflix

Plot:

A cynical young woman in New York City keeps dying and returning to the party that's being thrown in her honor on that same evening. She tries to find a way out of this strange time loop.

Personal Opinion:

I discovered Groundhog Day about two years ago, when the movie Happy Death Day came out, and I gotta admit that I committed the awful mistake of watching that shitty movie first and then watch the classic movie from 1993. But whatever, what's done it's done. I really liked the concept for both movies, you die and then magically relive the same day over and over. I don't know who came up with that idea, but it's pretty cool, and you can't even imagine how many things you can do with it. HDD was good you know, but it felt a little off, because it went up to only one part and she never actually made it to the next day you know. Which it actually happens on the 1993 movie. Another thing about that movie was that it was a HORROR movie. Which I kind of hate. Like, it's not like it ruined the movie, but it took out the whole humanity of the Groundhog day concept. But then, almost 3 years later, Russian Doll came out, and it's completely different from any Groundhog day you've ever seen.

The idea it's the same, a woman who dies and goes back to the same day, but there's a more realistic twist to it. She doesn't have to find out something about a killer for example, but to get out of that constant loop she had to overcome herself so that she can realize why she keeps dying over and over. Which it's pretty cool, it's not a superficial thing, and the meaning at the end it's actually reaaaaally deep and you have to watch it at least twice to understand it.

The cast it was okay you know. Like, every character was minding their own business from start to finish, even more, the ones that don't get involved at all during the course of the deaths. Maxine for example, she literally had to do the same thing over and over each scene, with slight changes, but she had to do the same at the end, and I completely applaud that. Every actor that wasn't a part of the main thing, were literally the best actors ever in a series even. Like, they had to show the same energy for every episode, for the same scene, with the same lines. I would've literally go INSANE.

Natasha Lyonne and Charlie Bernett did an AMAZING job all throughout the series. One thing I really appreciate from the directors/writers it's when the characters grow over the course of the movie/series. In Russian Doll, in the beginning, we have a Nadia that doesn't give a fuck about anything, but in the last episode, we see the "real" Nadia, her real identity that was deep inside her, and she was able to unveil it thanks to dying over and over non-stop. The same thing happens with Alan, he overcomes his fear of being alone, which made him do something really bad.

Netflix it's not playing games with all the new series coming out, and it really shows on the production. I'm not talking budget or anything like that, I'm talking about all the effort and hard work they put into this shows. With this series, it completely reflects that it's not something that they thought in a day. Amy Poehler told in many interviews that the idea was in her head forever, and with the other creators put as much effort into it as they could. And it turned out amazing. I would've loved to see her make a character though, as an extra at least. I didn't see her at all in a leading role, so with a little extra character would've been good you know.

One thing I don't talk enough often it's the wardrobe. And I know in this show it's like a little bit more normal, but oh boy those outfits were IT. And I can't even imagine how they've chosen them. In my opinion, they had to do outfits that every time the viewer see it again, it wouldn't be like "Oh no, AGAIN?". For me at least, when Nadia wakes up in from of that bathroom mirror, all my attention would go to her hair down to her gorgeous golden necklace, and then it'd go to Maxine beautiful light blue gown with that futuristic makeup look, but then it'd go down to earth with Lizzy overall. The wardrobe it's amazing, a completely 10/10 for the costume design department.

Wrapping it up, because this it's getting a little long, all I have to say it's that it's one of the best young adults tv shows you'll find at the moment. It has a good cast and a really good story, it's well made and it's not repetitive even though it goes through the course of a day over and over. If you're into more real-things and a little drama, then this it's for you.

I absolutley recommend it
