Crazy Rich Asians: A groundbreaking achievement by hollywood, or is it?
Well hello everyone, how's your thursday going so far? Mine is going teRRIBLE. I had to clean up my bedroom which took me like half a day but whatever, at least I got out alive of that mess thank god.
Yesterday night, i was pretty bored actually and decided to go to my loyal app popcorn time and watch a movie. And little did i know that they already uploaded Crazy Rich Asians. I was like I hAVE to watch it. You see when it premiered in my city i couldn't go because life you know, but i finally got to understand why everyone is so obssesed with this movie. So here goes my opinion on the movie "Crazy Rich Asians"
Basic info:
Duration: 121 minutes (2 hours, credits included)
Director: Jon M. Chu
Production: Warner Bros.
Stars: Constance Wu (aka qween); Henry Golding (hot af)
Premiered on August 7th in the US
Storyline:
The story follows Rachel Chu (Wu), an American-born Chinese economics professor, who travels to her boyfriend Nick's (Golding) hometown of Singapore for his best friend's wedding. Before long, his secret is out: Nick is from a family that is impossibly wealthy, he's perhaps the most eligible bachelor in Asia, and every single woman in his ultra-rarefied social class is incredibly jealous of Rachel and wants to bring her down.
Personal Opinion:
Crazy, rich, and asians. That's all you have to say to make me go to watch this movie. I personally love films about rich people and all their problems, and this one has it all. It has the great conbination of all classic rich people movies, and it's everything I could've asked for.
It starts off a little back in time, in 1995, with the principal "villiain" of the movie entering a hotel and exeperiencing a sadly common racism episode at a fancy (like really fancy) hotel. Since those few minutes, it got my attention. At first I thought it'd be based on how asian people struggles with racism even nowadays, but it's the whole opposite. It shows how anyone can become whatever they want if you put work into it.
Anyway
The plot itself it's a little cliche. The girl who came from nothing falls in love with the richest guy in town. Like, come on hollywood, you just couldn't think of something else. And I know it's based on a book, but come on man, there are such good ideas out there, and they choose the most common one. Whatever, if I go onm it will become a rant to hollywood.
In my opinion, the cast was choosen PERFECTLY. Like, they just couldn't put up a better cast than this. I meeeeean, Constance Wu, Henry Golding, Awkwafina, and many more in the same movie? You already got all my coins. I think the best one and that made me paused the movie just to laugh was the queen called Awkwafina. I first saw her on Ocean's 8, and she was awesome. It's sad that they didn't give her a more protagonist rol, but i loved all of her scenes. Also Nico Santos? A total king if you ask me. Even though he portrayed a really stereotypical gay man, it was awesome. Him and Awkwafina were the best to watch.
One thing that like didn't quite like was that they didn't pay that much attention to Astrid's husband affair. I think it'd be one hell of an opportunity to tell her story correctly, but they almost didn't care about it at all. It was like, "Oh he cheated, whatever let's go on with Rachel and the beef with Nick's Mother" you know. But the little they told us, it was really good.
Besides that minuscule part, it was completely worth it watching it. Was it history changing because of the extensive asian cast? Kinda, it wasn't a movie that changed the course of movie history, but it was something not a lot of people would do. It wasn't ground-breaking either, the story still is a complete cliche, but you know how people love this stories.
One last thing, I don't know that much about asian culture, but it seemed really well represented. It didn't have any asian cliches things, and even though i read some comments that said it had, mainly on the way of speaking and makeup. I mean, come oN MAN.They can't look every single fucking detail on the movie, but whatever.
Overall, pretty damn good. Not history-changing like some may say, but really really good.
I'd totally recommend it, and if you like romantic/drama genres, you must watch it
Rating: 4/5
